Our recent school monitoring visit alongside the District Inspector of Schools, the government official responsible for monitoring education standards, has confirmed what we have long believed—Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a game-changer! The evidence from the ground is inspiring, with real improvements in academic performance, attendance, and learner well-being.
At Nyamitete Primary School, 40 new learners (30 girls and 10 boys) have joined the SEL club this term. The headteacher and senior woman teacher report that learners are coping better with emotional challenges, attendance has improved, and many are now opening up about issues affecting them at home and school. The suggestion boxes we introduced as feedback mechanisms are actively being used, strengthening student-teacher engagement.
Most impressively, the school registered its best exam performance in years—100% of candidates passed in the top two levels of the Primary Leaving Exam. In fact, one of the standout learners, an active SEL club member, excelled in the recent exams, and earned a scholarship from the company Total to join St. Andrea in Hoima, one of the region’s top-performing schools.
At Walukuba Primary School, the impact is just as remarkable! The school’s pass rate has risen from 61% in 2022 (pre-SEL) to 74% in 2023, and now an outstanding 85% in 2024! The headteacher also reports a historic shift – every Primary Six learner has returned for Primary Seven, reversing a long-standing dropout trend.
These aren’t just numbers—they represent lives transformed, futures secured, and the power of SEL to create lasting change. The government’s involvement through the District Inspector of Schools reinforces the importance of scaling this intervention for even greater impact.
This progress fuels our determination to push for sustainable SEL integration in schools across Uganda. A huge appreciation to the dedicated teachers, learners, and partner Link Education International for making this happen! Together, we are redefining education.
