In Wolaita zone, a remarkable transformation is underway in the realm of childhood education. Thanks to the STAGES Project, focused tutorial support programs are making a tangible difference in improving literacy skills among children, especially those facing learning challenges.
The Head of the local government Wolaita Education Office recently highlighted the significance of this initiative:
“I am witnessing that the tutorial support has made a significant contribution to filling learning gaps, particularly for girls who struggle with learning.”
This recognition underscores the vital role personalized learning support plays in bridging educational gaps.
The zone’s educational team analysed the results of the 2023 Grade 8 National Exams and found that 90% of the girls who passed the exam in STAGES supported schools had benefited from the tutorial programme.
This inspired a bold decision: to expand the program across all grades and schools in the zone, doubling the number of children receiving targeted tutorial support.
“We have adopted this approach as a key strategy for supporting students who have learning struggles” – Head of Education
One inspiring story comes from a young girl who received tutorial support:
“I had to use reading assistance during exams because I couldn’t read until I was in Grade 5. I would choose to remain silent [in class] since I was worried about other students’ reactions if I gave the wrong answer to a question.
Thanks to the tutorial support, I could get the foundations of learning.
Tutoring gives me individual attention that I could not get in a crowded classroom. The tutorial support for me was not only for learning improvement but has also built my self-confidence.”
